Massage for Stress Relief & Relaxation
When life is busy, it can be difficult to slow down. You may have a demanding job, a busy home life, spend much of your day sitting at a desk or looking at a screen, or simply feel that you've been doing too much for too long. Stress can leave you feeling tense, restless or unable to switch off, even when you have the opportunity to take a break.
You don't need to be experiencing pain or have a particular physical problem to benefit from massage. At Touchstone Massage Therapy in Cambridge, I offer personalised massage that gives you time to step away from everyday demands, relax deeply and reconnect with yourself.
How does massage help with relaxation?
Massage gives you an opportunity to stop doing for a while and simply notice how your body feels. A quiet environment, supportive touch and a break from your to-do list can help you slow down and settle into the experience of being cared for.
Stress isn't just in the mind; it can also be experienced physically. During busy or difficult periods, you may notice that your shoulders feel tense, your jaw feels tight, or your whole body seems less able to settle. This doesn't necessarily mean that stress is the cause of muscular tension or discomfort — our bodies are influenced by many different factors — but massage gives you an opportunity to work with areas that feel tense or uncomfortable while also allowing you to relax more generally. Research suggests that massage may also help reduce feelings of anxiety in some people, although individual responses vary.
A massage tailored to you
I don't see relaxation and therapeutic massage as separate things. A massage can be deeply relaxing while still being tailored to areas that need more focused attention.
A relaxation-focused massage doesn't have to mean very light pressure or a fixed sequence of movements. I may draw on holistic and deep tissue massage techniques as well as other approaches from my training, working more firmly in some areas and more gently in others. We'll talk beforehand about what you'd like from your massage and any areas you'd particularly like me to focus on or avoid.
My aim is to create a treatment that responds to what you need on the day, while giving you the opportunity to feel comfortable, supported and able to switch off.
By the end of your treatment you may find that areas where you've been unconsciously holding tension have begun to soften and that you feel calmer, less tense and more at ease in your body.
What happens at your appointment?
Before we begin, we'll have a brief conversation about how you're feeling and what you'd like from your massage. You don't need to arrive with a specific plan in mind — it's okay simply to tell me that you're feeling stressed or tired and would like to relax.
During the massage, I'll check in where appropriate about pressure and comfort, but I also understand that part of the pleasure of having a massage is not having to talk or make decisions. Once you're comfortable, you're very welcome simply to relax and enjoy the treatment.
For your first appointment, I allow an additional 10 minutes for your initial consultation at no extra charge, so our conversation doesn't reduce your massage time.
